First-Year Mentors

First-Year Mentors at Berry College play a crucial role in helping new students transition to college.   Mentors serve as teaching assistants to BCC 100 (First-Year Seminar) instructors and as guides and role models to new students.  First-Year Mentors are selected through an application and interview process each year. Three days of training in the spring and fall help mentors get to know their instructors and understand BCC 100 goals, learn the needs of new students and the dimensions of the mentor role and come together as a team of student leaders.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with instructors to plan and implement the BCC 100 (First-Year Seminar) course.
  • Attend each BCC 100 class meeting
  • Lead discussions and provide instruction as needed
  • Organize out-of-classroom experiences to facilitate student connections
  • Reach out to students individually
  • Refer students to support resources on campus
  • Model responsible citizenship in the Berry Community
  • Support other mentors and sharing best practices with them
