Moon Gallery Art Exhibition Review

Journals and Reading Lists features recent work by Professor Travis Head that is autobiographical and utilizes drawing that is, in the words of the artist, “mediated by technology and entertainment.” This blending of the personal with the narrative and digital conventions of video games, for example, are contained within bound journals covering a period of months or years. His Reading Lists function as journals but not in the sequential pages of a book but as accumulations of experiences on a single page such as his Quilt Squares project. Started in November of 2015, the drawings reference the barn quilts that Travis Head sees driving country roads around his home in Blacksburg, Virginia.

The recipient of numerous artist residencies and a recent fellowship from the Virginia Museum of Fine Art, Mr. Head has a considerable exhibition record including recent shows at the University of Kentucky, Artspace in Raleigh, NC, and the University of Alabama at Huntsville. He holds a BA in studio art from the University of Mary Washington and a MA/MFA in painting and drawing from the University of Iowa. He is chair of the studio program and associate professor of drawing at Virginia Tech University.
