36-year basketball scoring record finally falls
Not a lot of records hold up for 36 long years. Doug Price's (69C) did.
It was 1969 when Doug (pictured at left) finished racking up a record-setting 1,923 career points as a Berry hoopster. Now, senior Cameron Fitch of Acworth, Ga., has broken that record – and the season isn't over yet.
Cameron shattered the record Feb. 17 as he scored a team-high 24 points in a comeback win against Faulker University. He is pictured at right scoring the history-making basket.
In the week that followed, Cameron was named Southern States Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the second time in a month and then was honored as the NAIA's National Player of the Week.

Larry McRae to become professor emeritus
Dr. Larry McRae (60C), who joined Berry's faculty in 1974, will become professor emeritus of chemistry upon his retirement in May 2005.
Dr. McRae's career at Berry has been as exceptional as it has been long. In 2003-04, for example, he was presented the David and Lu Garrett Award for Meritorious Teaching, and in 1992 he received the Vulcan Materials Co.'s Teaching Excellence Award.

Scholarship night brings together donors and recipients
The were lots of smiles ... and some tears. More than anything, however, there were good feelings all around at Berry's fourth annual Scholarship Night.
Donors who have established scholarships were united with the current students benefitting from them. If these donors ever wondered about the "return" on their scholarship "investment," they probably now wish the stock market could give them the same level of value!
One special guest at the event was Dr. Gary Fountain, rector of Chatham Hall, an all-girl preparatory school in Virginia, who shared his own scholarship story and the important lessons he learned about giving. Special thanks go out to Ed Laird (64C) and his wife, Cecil, for helping arrange Dr. Fountain's visit.
Thanks also go out to Sharon Brookshire, parent of the late Katie Brookshire, who died while a student at Berry. Ms. Brookshire gave a beautiful account of the scholarship established in Katie's memory. Its current recipient, Victoria Aiella (07c), then spoke of the legacy at Berry that the scholarship and Katie have left.

Students reel in research prizes
There was nothing fishy about the performance of two Berry students at the recent meeting of the Georgia division of the American Fisheries Society. Seniors Anna Rahn of Milwaukee, Wis., and Laura Dobbins of Knoxville, Tenn., competed against graduate students from such institutions as UGA and Auburn when they presented their research at the conference. Anna brought home a second-place award and Laura placed fourth.

"Stinky" Pearson to hold book signing
Not every college professor would admit to the nickname "Stinky." Dr. Bob Pearson, professor, chair and lecturer of health and physical education, not only admits it, but he also has written about it!
His book, Stinky's Tales, is a humorous recollection of his years growing up in a small New York village in the 1940s and 1950s. It also reflects on some of the things that have disappeared from our lives in this fast-paced world.
"Stinky" will be signing copies of his book 2-4 p.m. March 5 in the Barnes and Noble in Rome.

Berry offers help in navigating the college admissions maze
A College Admissions Workshop for Berry alumni will be held June 10-11. If you have a child, grandchild or other relative or friend who soon will be navigating the maze of the college admissions process, here's where to find help!
The program is not Berry-specific. You will learn what makes a college application successful or unsuccessful and how students can identify colleges that best meet their interests and abilities. A mock admissions committee will help you understand how admissions decisions are made.
