Happy New Graduates!

A fresh batch of Berry College alums were welcomed at the 2013 Fall Commencement.

Ninety-three men and women were awarded their diplomas Dec. 14 upon successful completion in undergraduate and graduate studies.

“With today’s commencement celebration comes responsibility,” said Willis Potts, former chair of the University System of Georgia Board of Regents, who was the featured speaker. “Responsibility is an awesome word. It’s the thread across all of your education and is seen in the responsibility exhibited by this outstanding faculty and the leadership in helping you make it to this day.”

This year’s student speaker, Drew Dillard of Blue Ridge, Ga., majored in marketing and management and upon graduation plans to continue operating his online women’s clothing store. He graduated summa cum laude and was the recipient of the Stephen Cage Scholarship.

Dillard took to the stage and acknowledged that the graduates had just completed a week of “lasts;” last emails received about lost and found items, last all-nighters, and the last time that they will live in such a friendly and supportive environment.

He went on to encourage his peers that as the week of “lasts” came to a close, an endless world of possible “firsts” is now at their fingertips. Reflecting upon and drawing connections to his experience at Berry, he quoted the late Nelson Mandela.  “It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
