August 18, 2009 ROME, Ga. -- A busy summer for Berry College’s intercollegiate athletic department continued Tuesday with the announcement that Shaun Williamson has been selected to head the new women’s lacrosse program, which will begin play during the 2010-11 academic year. "We have made another strong addition to our athletics staff with the signing of Shaun Williamson," said Todd Brooks, Berry’s director of athletics. "Shaun has a great deal of experience starting new women's lacrosse programs, and I think he will continue that trend here at Berry." Before assuming the reins at Berry, Williamson assisted in the launch of NCAA Division II women's lacrosse at both Belmont Abbey and Lees-McRae. His most successful stint came at his last school, Belmont Abbey, where he established a top-10 caliber program that produced two All-Americans and five All-Region performers. In 2008, Williamson was named Womenslacrosse.com National Coach of the Year for Division II after leading his second-year squad to a No. 10 national ranking. A year later, Williamson coached his team to a No. 9 final ranking. Williamson finished with an overall record of 40-31 while coaching at Belmont Abbey. "I am excited for the opportunity that I have been given by the administration at Berry," Williamson said. "I feel like the school has the right mix to become a very successful NCAA Division III college lacrosse program." Williamson's commitment to excellence extends to the classroom, where his Belmont Abbey team twice earned recognition as an Academic Honor Squad by posting a team grade-point-average of 3.1 or higher. During his three active seasons at Belmont Abbey, Williamson coached a total of 13 Academic All-Conference selections. Prior to his tenure at Belmont Abbey, Williamson posted a 6-14 record over two seasons as coach of the first women’s lacrosse team at Lees-McRae. It was there, in 2003, that he became involved with the NCAA Division II Lacrosse Committee. He served on the committee for four years, including stints as National Committee Chair and South Region Committee Chair in 2005-07. In addition to his success as a college coach, Williamson has worked to increase interest in lacrosse at the grass-roots level as a coach at the University of Virginia Fast Break Camp. He also assists with Florida Lacrosse Camps and the Bill Pilats Holiday Goalie School and further helps to grow the sport through work with USA Athletes International. A 2002 graduate of Lees-McRae, Williamson holds a bachelor's degree in history. This year he finished his master's degree in sports management from California University of Pennsylvania. "I think that Berry will be a great place to start a winning program,” he stated. “I am ready to go out and start recruiting new players for our program."
