Roatan: Summer 2018

Day 2 - June 3 - First Dives for the class

This morning began with a good breakfast, and then everyone gathered their gear for our first dive.  Our boat for the week is the Alexander, captained by Santos with Edwin as our Dive Master. Edwin is known for finding tons of “neat stuff,” so we are in good hands.   Our first dive was the checkout, and, for most, this was their first time diving in the Caribbean.  Everyone agreed that it was much better than their freshwater checkout dive. During our two dives today, the students saw a large school of creole wrasse, hogfish, squirrel fish, a large trumpet fish, and schools of sergeant majors. After an excellent dinner, it was off to lecture to hear about the history of coral reefs.  Tomorrow we head to Maya Key for coral identification training and a visit to the wildlife rehab center.
