English, Rhetoric, and Writing
If you major in English at Berry College, you will be engaged in reading, analyzing, writing about and discussing a wide range of texts written in English or available in English translation. You’ll complete a 21-credit core curriculum and one of three 18-hour concentrations. The English core curriculum will introduce you to British, American and world literary traditions. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the ethical, aesthetic, intellectual and cultural issues addressed in many different types of literature from a variety of historical periods. You’ll also learn methods of literary research and analysis.
English Major (all concentrations, 39 hours)
Students must complete the requirements of the English core plus one of the major concentrations. In addition, students are required to develop a portfolio of written work that represents significant successes in their career as an English Major at Berry College. This should be completed during the term just prior to the student’s graduation and must be approved by department faculty. All majors should consult with their advisor, the Department chair, and/or the department’s Curriculum Committee Chair for more information about the portfolio assessment.
