International Living Learning Community

The International Living Learning Community (ILLC) grant is meant to provide an opportunity abroad for faculty and staff who are interesting in getting involved with international experiences and increasing their cultural competencies, but are unsure of how to get started. The ILLC is especially designed for faculty/staff who have little to no experience abroad, but is open to experienced travelers as well.

The ILLC is a cohort of four faculty and one staff, along with two leaders. The aim is to have broad and equal representation of faculty across the four schools. Participation in the ILLC entails attending four workshops during the Spring semester, attending a week-long in-country site visit in early May, and a workshop in September. The location for the site visit will vary year to year.

Faculty may apply via Berry Abroad.  The application and selection process will occur in November-December.

Advising Students on Study Abroad

Students from all majors are able to study abroad!  If a student mentions being interested in study abroad, encourage them to visit the International Experiences office.

If you advise students, you might be asked how classes can count at Berry. It’s important to note that only department chairs and deans can approve study abroad classes to transfer back to Berry, and students will receive instructions on how to get approval for classes as part of the application process. if you would like more information, please visit the Academics page. That said, students are encouraged to meet with their faculty advisor to discuss study abroad and when studying abroad would fit best into their plans, especially for students attending semester programs.

Students may ask you about classes that have to take at Berry and which classes might be more likely be approved to transfer in. Students may ask you about the sequence of classes offered at Berry to figure out if they are able swap classes around in their schedule to give them more flexibility with picking classes abroad.

Always encourage students to meet with the staff in International Experiences, and hesitate to reach out if you have questions.
