HOPE FAQ

WHAT ARE HOPE ATTEMPTED HOURS?

HOPE Attempted Hours determine when you reach the grade point average checkpoints as well as the maximum number of hours allowed to receive HOPE. HOPE attempted hours are determined by summing the credit hours for all courses that you have taken. HOPE regulations require that hours for courses from which you withdrew (did not drop during the official drop/add period) be included in the calculation of your HOPE Attempted Hours.

WHAT TYPE OF HOURS ARE INCLUDED OR EXCLUDED IN THE DETERMINATION OF HOPE ATTEMPTED HOURS?

Included Hours:
Credit hours for courses taken after high school graduation in which a grade of "A", "B", "C", "D", "WF", or "F" was assigned.
In addition, credit hours for courses taken after high school graduation in which any of the following grades were assigned will also be included in HOPE Attempted Hours:
"I", "NR", "W", "WS", "S", "U", and "H"

Dual enrollment courses covered by the Accel Program will only count toward the 127 hour cap.

Excluded Hours:
Advanced Placement (AP)
Credit by Examination (CBE)
College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
Credit earned through Joint Enrollment (post-secondary options program) prior to high school graduation

WHEN IS MY GRADE POINT AVERAGE CHECKED FOR HOPE ELEGIBILITY?

Your grade point average (GPA) is checked when you reach 30, 60, and 90 HOPE Attempted Hours. You must have a 3.00 GPA at these tier checkpoints. Effective spring 2005, HOPE regulations require an additional checkpoint at the end of every spring semester for maintaining eligibility. HOPE may be lost at the end of any spring semester as well as at any of the 30/60/90 checkpoints. HOPE can be regained only at the 30/60/90 checkpoints.

IS MY HOPE GPA THE SAME AS THE GPA THAT APPEARS ON MY GRADE MAILER OR TRANSCRIPT?

The GPA that appears on your grade mailer and transcript may be different than your HOPE GPA. Your HOPE GPA must include all your Berry work as well as all your transfer work. If you took developmental courses, these courses must also be calculated in your HOPE GPA. If you have questions about the calculation of your HOPE GPA, you should contact the Registrar's Office. If you have questions about HOPE eligibility or HOPE regulations, you may visit the  GAFUTURES Web site or contact the Financial Aid Office.

HOW MANY HOURS MAY I ATTEMPT AND STILL KEEP HOPE?

The maximum number of hours that you may attempt and keep HOPE is normally 127 hours.
