PREPARED TO SERVE AS A LEADER AT BERRY — AND AFTER GRADUATION

If you thrive as leader with a deep desire to serve in this capacity on campus and in the greater community, the Leadership and Service Fellows Scholarship offers training and opportunities for you to learn and grow in this role. Structured around current leadership models and designed to increase your leadership knowledge and capacities, the program cultivates a community of leaders and peer mentors. You’ll be encouraged to:

  • Serve campus through leadership roles and/or action
  • Seek out the means to improve campus organizations and teams
  • Identify community needs and pursue opportunities to serve, either on- or off-campus
  • Facilitate leadership development of peers
  • Explore leadership and service opportunities in your community after graduation

Leadership Fellows are typically involved as:

  • Executive Board Members of the Student Government Association
  • Class officers
  • First-year mentors
  • SOAR leaders
  • Resident assistants
  • Participants in Berry College Volunteer Services
  • Student supervisors in the LifeWorks program
  • Leaders in student organizations such as the Athletes Bettering the Community, Model UN, Honors Student Union, Young Life, Solidarity Week and Krannert Center Activities Board
  • Partners with community organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Restoration Rome, Boys and Girls Club, P.A.W.S. (Public Animal Welfare Services), William S. Davies Shelters, Salvation Army, Keep Rome/Floyd Beautiful and South Rome Community Gardens

HOW DOES YOUR PARTICIPATION ADD VALUE TO A BERRY COLLEGE EDUCATION?

You’ll benefit from the program while living on campus, preparing for your career or graduate school and pursuing personal and professional goals after graduation because of:

  • Individual leadership development through curriculum and community-building activities
  • Transferable skills developed through spearheading service projects and leading teams of peers
  • Ongoing professional development activities and preparation for your life and a successful career after Berry
  • A community of campus leaders to support your ideas and initiatives
  • A network of mentors — from staff and peers to alumni — who will offer advice and letters of recommendation during and after college

ARE YOU ELIGIBLE?

The Leadership and Service Fellows Scholarship is a merit-based program. We select 10-12 incoming students annually for a $3,000 scholarship that increases by $1,000 each subsequent year for up to four years total. To be considered, you must have a track record of:

  • Significant leadership experience with organizations, teams and/or projects in high school or with community organizations (We look for major leadership positions held and consistent dedicated engagement, not just participation in multiple activities.)
  • Demonstrated commitment, initiative and teamwork through leadership experiences
  • General understanding of what it means to be a leader in one’s community

WHAT IS THE COMMITMENT ASKED OF YOU?

  • Participation in program activities, class meetings, readings and reflections (three to five hours per week)
  • Initiative demonstrated through involvement in the LifeWorks program and campus leadership as well as facilitation of campus leadership programs
  • Visibility on campus as a resident engaged in campus life and service
  • Demonstration of integrity, good campus citizenship and mentoring of others
