Barry Spacks was the author of eleven poetry collections and was named the first Poet Laureate of Santa Barbara, California, in 2005. From 1960 to 1981, Spacks was a Professor of Literature at M.I.T., and he was named the Distinguished Professor in Humanities and Fine Arts at the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1991.
