First-Year Programs

The Office of First-Year Experience organizes a number of programs throughout the year, including these:

First-Year Community Engagement

During the academic year, first-year students will collaborate with their BCC 100 instructor, mentor and class and local community partners to serve the Rome -Floyd community. By taking part in a service project, students put into practice Berry's motto: "Not to be ministered unto, but to minister."

Majors and Career Exploration Week

Each winter, the Office of Academic Transitions and the Center for Personal and Professional Development host a Major and Career Exploration Week. During the week, each individual school hosts an interactive event to educate students on the majors and minors that they offer. Throughout the week, workshops and events are offered on topics such as possible career pathways and creating a "good life" using Berry resources. The week culminates in an event where students can change or declare their major. Students may schedule a major exploration meeting with the Office of Academic transitions throughout the year.

First-Year Reading Experience

During the summer before their first-year, all students participate in a community reading. During the 2022-2023 school year, students will read The Moth: All These Wonders: True Stories About Facing the Unknown, a collection of stories about facing the unknown. This reading will be discussed throughout Viking Venture and into the Fall semester. Students will participate in an exciting semester-long conversation with their BCC 100 class about the stories offered in this book.
