What is an SLE?

Left Nav

SLE stands for Signature Learning Experience, and it can be many different things. These are experiences that typically occur outside of a traditional classroom setting (though it could be something that is part of a class) and require students to assume greater responsibility, independence, and leadership in the outcomes of the experience.

While there are many things that could be Signature Learning Experiences, these are some of the most common:

  • Undergraduate research
  • Study abroad
  • Upper-level student work
  • Internships
  • Community-engaged learning
  • Student leadership positions

We believe that, while these experiences can be meaningful by themselves, they truly become the Signature Learning Experiences when students engage with them on a deeper level by

  1. evaluate their own learning and personal development through reflection and analysis;
  2. connect their Signature Learning Experience with other curricular and life experiences to broaden their thinking; and
  3. articulate the meaning and impact of their learning and growth to a broader audience.

The Signature Experience Program provides students the opportunity to deepen their learning in this way by completing BCC 300: Signature Seminar and creating a professional ePortfolio.
