Acclaimed Berry author discusses first novel

An acclaimed author and Berry College alum discussed his first novel “Lake Life” Oct. 7 at the College Chapel.

David James Poissant’s suspenseful and unexpected narrative sheds light on the challenges and rewards of family. Poissant graduated from Berry in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in English and a minor in secondary education.

His collection, “The Heaven of Animals,” a collection of short stories, was named one of Amazon’s Best Short Story Collections of 2014 and one of Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s 9 Best Books of 2014. He is a winner of the GLCA New Writers Award and a Florida Book Award, longlisted for the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize, and a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize.

Poissant is also an assistant professor in the Creative Writing MFA program at the University of Central Florida. His stories and essays have been featured in The American Scholar, The New York Times, The Atlantic Monthly and many more publications.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this event was not open to the public.
