The Interfaith Council at Berry College recently hosted a discussion on comedy and race, concerning American Muslims.
Samah Choudhury spoke about “When ‘Islam is One Whimsical Religion’: Race, Faith, and Gender In American Muslim Comedy.” She is an assistant professor of philosophy and religion at Ithaca College in New York.
“The assumption is that if you don’t have a sense of humor, if you can’t take a joke, then you are going to have a problem living in a pluralistic society,” Choudhury noted.
Choudhury earned her bachelor’s degree in political science and Middle Eastern studies and a master’s degree in Middle Eastern studies from Harvard University, and a doctorate in Islamic studies from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
