A Berry College professor recently received an award from the American Journalism Historians Association for his scholarship.
Communication Professor Brian Carroll earned the J. William Snorgrass Award for Outstanding Paper on Minority Journalism History Topic. His paper, “Transgressions: An Editor’s Crusade to Thwart America’s First Black Shakespearean Acting Company,” looks at the coordinated effort to shut down the first Black Shakespearean acting troupe in the United States in the 1820s.
The award was presented during last month’s national convention of the AJHA held in Columbus, Ohio. It is the fifth time Carroll has won the Snorgrass Award.
Carroll received his doctorate in journalism and mass communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has authored eight books. These books include the award-winning “When to Stop the Cheering? The Black Press, the Black Community & the Integration of Professional Baseball,” "A Devil's Bargain: The Black Press and Black Baseball 1915-1955” and, most recently, “Shakespeare’s Sceptered Isle: Finding English National Identity in the Plays.”
The American Journalism Historians Association began in 1981 and works to promote scholarship of the history of journalism and mass communication.
