This past August, a Berry College professor participated in a research workshop at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
Professor of History Matthew G. Stanard worked alongside scholars from the U.S., Poland, Israel, Ukraine, Germany, the United Kingdom and Italy for the Jacob and Yetta Gelman International Research Workshop on Nazi Propaganda. The program lasted two weeks. Their work included exhibit tours, presenting their research and the examination of questions surrounding propaganda and Nazi persecution.
“The U.S. Holocaust Museum’s Mandel Center does extraordinary and important work, and it was an incredible opportunity to lead this workshop alongside Dr. Stanislovas Stasiulis [of the Lithuanian Institute of History],” Stanard said. “Delving into the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s archives and hearing about the research projects of such a diverse group of engaged international scholars reminded me of the value of the discipline of history. We do not know what we know about the past by some magic. It takes hard work, time, debate, reflection and funding to uncover and understand our shared history, including its most horrifying chapters.”
The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum is America’s national institution for the documentation, analysis and understanding of the history of the Holocaust. It serves as the nation’s memorial to the millions of people who were murdered in the Holocaust.
Stanard teaches history at Berry and serves as the president of the French Colonial Historical Society. He earned his B.A. from Wake Forest University and an M.A. and Ph.D from Indiana University-Bloomington. He is an established author and researcher.
