So Vogue: Teaching Fashion Media in the Big Apple

Audrey Bennett ’25 took a break from the rigor of graduate studies at UNC-Chapel Hill for NYC summer adventures. She signed on with Vogue College of Fashion to teach aspiring journalists how to produce style content. Off the clock, Bennett took in the sights, design related and otherwise.

She assisted with four classes over eight weeks. Bennett’s role as the managing editor of Valkyrie, Berry College’s lifestyle magazine, served her well.

“We taught the students how to write a fashion article, how to edit their work and how a magazine is laid out,” she explains. “They presented a mock-up of their own September issue of Vogue, including a cover, articles, advertisements, brand collaborations and mood boards.”

The best views ever — indoors and outside

Navigating a different urban landscape proved an adjustment, but Bennett adapted: “By the end of the summer, the subway was super easy. The sirens and car horns truly never stop. However, after a while, I didn’t even realize they were there.”

Always on the go, Bennett explored the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Costume Institute and The Morgan Library and Museum. She found gorgeous views and unmatched people watching in Central Park and on the Brooklyn Bridge.

Shopping excursions were a major highlight and a way to stay on top of trends. She combed Manhattan for vintage designer clothes and cataloged a list of stores.

She’s got the look: timeless style

Acknowledging that style is subjective, Bennett says her takeaway is “less is always more.” She notes, “At the office, a white t-shirt and jeans with some ballet flats is chic, professional, and it gets the job done. Of course, if your personal style is more elaborate than that, then go for it. No matter what I wore in the city, no one batted an eye. It's the best place to be yourself!”

After her stint at UNC, Bennett would love to work as a PR professional or journalist with a publication. Would she return to New York? She’s open to opportunity. Borrowing a Great Gatsby line, she savors her time in the city and its “first wild promise of all the mystery and beauty in the world.”
