No day is the same for Nile King ’28. The scholar-athlete juggles three campus jobs, plays basketball for Berry and runs a clothing business on the side. Along the way, he’s applied lessons on work-life balance. When asked about his favorite LifeWorks position, he says all three are equally valuable.
“Being a social media manager for the Campbell School of Business has taught me unwavering confidence,” Nile explains. “I’ve spent a majority of my time working in front of camera at public places to post on platforms for thousands of people to see.”
Nile learned “the importance of listening and learning” from his role as an intramurals assistant. He adds, “Being a laundry assistant taught me the beauty of simplicity … getting paid to do laundry has been so important in my financial status as a college student.”
Founding the Colossal brand
His apparel brand — Colossal — kick-started in an entrepreneurship class during high school.
“I vividly recall spending the first month of the process having absolutely no idea what I was going to do,” Nile recalls. “Then, it hit me. Seeing that I was in the middle of a growth spurt, my clothes were slowly, but surely, getting smaller. All the clothes for taller kids were either very boring or incredibly over/undersized. The world needed clothes that had sizes for taller populations that still looked stylish.”
He embraced the challenges of owning a start-up, saying, “Colossal has taught me so much about failure and how to overcome it.”
Advice on staying focused
Nile notes that finding your own rhythm is integral to balancing multiple activities: “Some people can wake up early in the morning and get everything done before lunchtime. Others, like myself, have ideas that spark up in the wee hours of the night, and they find themselves the most productive there.”
Now he’s ready to apply his work ethic and drive in business settings. Nile says, “My dream would be to work in any of the major large corporations in Atlanta (e.g., Mercedes-Benz Stadium, State Farm Arena, The Coca-Cola Company). I’m in the process of applying for internships!”
