Composing a Music Career Through Leadership, Research and Travel

Music education major Memphis Embrick discovered Berry through a friend in the high school band. Four years later, he’s leaving with significant research skills, leadership experience and a global perspective.

From day one, Berry’s music program felt like home. Alumni and students welcomed Memphis into Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a club at Berry and a nationally recognized music fraternity. He’s now the organization’s president, offering a welcoming experience to other music students.

Faculty support has been equally impactful. Alyssa Grey, assistant professor of instrumental music education, conducts the college wind ensemble and serves as a valued advisor. Memphis says, “She picks music that challenges us but that is also interesting and enjoyable to play.”

In Tune with Signature Learning Experiences

Memphis co-authored a resource guide for wind literature with Grey. As a result, he earned a spot presenting at the state music educators’ conference.

“Research taught me to look at music with a microscope, and see it in a completely new way,” Memphis says.

Like research, his summer trip to South Africa with the music department was instrumental in broadening his perspective.

“As my first time out of the country, teaching in Cape Town showed me how universal the desire to learn is even when cultures are very different,” explains Memphis.

He also found purpose in his role as the student director for new student orientation at Berry. “Helping families and students see what’s possible at Berry has been one of my favorite jobs,” he says. “I love passing on the joy I’ve found here.”

Finale to a Successful College Career

By his senior year, Memphis was known for his poise and rapport with faculty, staff and peers. He was chosen to introduce one of the most popular musical guests to visit Berry: American singer-songwriter and MacArthur Fellow Chris Thile.

Preparing to teach in Georgia after graduation, Memphis has big plans for his long-term future — pursuing a doctorate in wind conducting.

“Berry prepared me academically and personally,” he reflects. “The coursework is intentional, and the connections I’ve made will last a lifetime.”
