Senior Ashley Castaneda looks forward to achieving her career goal: labor and delivery nurse with a focus on maternal-newborn health in Atlanta. Leadership roles and service abroad in Kenya have strengthened her professional skills.
“What I love the most about nursing is the privilege of caring for others during the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Building genuine relationships at the bedside allows me to be an advocate as I ensure patients and their families feel supported and heard.”
How have leadership responsibilities shaped you?
Serving as office director in the president’s office has strengthened my ability to communicate with composure, handle sensitive matters with discretion and prioritize tasks under pressure. Managing these tasks mirrors my clinical workflow, as both require me to reassess issues that need immediate care versus routine tasks, attention to detail and decisive time management.
What did you learn about yourself while serving in Kenya?
I discovered a deeper sense of personal gratitude, adaptability and resilience. Being welcomed so warmly into the community taught me the value of cultural humility and changed the way I view everyday challenges. My favorite cultural experience was attending a local community festival filled with traditional music, dance, storytelling and theater. Experiencing their joy and pride firsthand made me feel at home and reinforced that compassionate care begins when we are open-minded and appreciate a community’s shared traditions.
What was the greatest lesson learned when you observed Kenyan nursing staff?
Limited resources do not diminish the standard of care given. While observing a C-section delivery, I saw how sterile surgical packs were limited. Instead of compromising patient care, the nurses improvised by using autoclaved linens to maintain a sterile field.
What is your most meaningful Berry experience?
Since my freshman year, I have prioritized being involved in organizations such as the Student Government Association, UNITY, Orgullo and International Club. This reminded me of Martha Berry’s motto: “Not to be ministered unto, but to minister.” Involvement allowed me to advocate for students, foster an inclusive campus and put servant leadership into practice.
Tell us about a mentor who has made a difference in your life.
Monserrat Vasquez, a 2024 Berry nursing graduate, introduced me to Berry College while I was still in high school. Monse spoke passionately about Berry’s community, mission and nursing program. Watching her thrive as a student motivated me to follow in her footsteps.
