Senior Scholars is a continuing education program for senior adults hosted by Oak Hill & the Martha Berry Museum. The program offers a wide variety of classes and social programs designed for adults 55 and older. Instructors include both Berry College faculty members and members of the Rome community. Join our program to build friendships and community, all while participating in lifelong learning and growth!

Senior Scholars offers a wide variety of classes every year to fit all interests, including courses in: history, studio arts & handicrafts, recreation & leisure, health & wellness, languages & writing, and much more! While we will have some reoccurring classes, others are only offered one time.

Like Berry College, Senior Scholars offers two full semesters of courses every year. For the 2025-2026 year, the Fall Semester courses will begin the week of September 15th and the Spring Semester courses will begin the week of February 16th. Most courses are between four and eight weeks in length. We also offer single-day courses and travel opportunities throughout the entire year!
Registration for each semester will open one month before the start of classes.

History & Religion
Tuesdays, February 17 – April 7 (8 weeks) from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Join Georgia Backroads magazine editor and publisher Dan Roper in an exploration of Georgia's rich history and natural heritage. The course will touch on a wide range of local events such as the Trail of Tears, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Great Depression, along with stories and lore about Berry College and its surrounding areas. Additionally, the course will explore the natural beauty of Northwest Georgia through discussions on its trails, trees, and wildlife.
About the instructor: Dan Roper is the editor and publisher of Georgia Backroads magazine, a print publication devoted to Georgia history, nature, travel, and lifestyles. He practiced law in Rome from 1986 to 2005, and has backgrounds in forestry, history, and writing. Since coming to Rome, he has taught in several capacities at Berry College – including serving as a regular instructor for Senior Scholars!

Tuesdays, February 17 – March 24 (6 weeks) from 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Explore the global scope of the Second World War through an in-depth study of its major military theatres and strategic campaigns. This six-week course explores the war’s shifting battlefronts—from the beaches of Normandy and the deserts of North Africa to the jungles of the Pacific and the steppes of the Eastern Front. Through a combination of maps, primary sources, and multimedia, participants will analyze the key strategies employed by Allied and Axis powers, assess the outcomes of major battles, and consider how geography, technology, and leadership shaped the course of the war. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply curious about this pivotal era, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the forces that defined the 20th century.
About the instructor: Camden Anich is a Museum Educator at the Museum of History and Holocaust Education at Kennesaw State University. He received his undergraduate degree in History with an additional certificate in Public History from Kennesaw State University. World War II and military history are his primary areas of interest.

Wednesday, March 4 from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
What role did Walt Disney Productions play in America’s fight against fascism? This one-day course explores how World War II transformed the studio both creatively and financially. By 1942, government contracts made up over 90% of Disney’s output, leading to a surge in propaganda films, training reels, and patriotic shorts. Participants will examine these wartime productions and discover how the studio balanced artistry, politics, and survival during one of the most turbulent periods in its history.
About the instructor: Dr. Curt Hersey is an associate professor and chair of the Department of Communication at Berry College. He teaches courses in filmmaking, media theory, and media history. Dr. Hersey is the author of A History of Television News Parody in America: Nothing but the Truthiness (2022) and lead editor of Making Thought Visible: Essays on Neurodiversity on Television (2025).

This program explores the diverse and powerful roles women played during the Holocaust — as victims, resisters, rescuers, and witnesses to history. Through survivor testimony, historical documents, and visual materials, participants will explore how gender shaped experiences under Nazi persecution and influenced responses to unimaginable circumstances. Join us for a deeper understanding of the Holocaust through the lens of women’s resilience and strength.
About the instructor: Katy Matello is an Education Coordinator at the Museum of History and Holocaust Education. She holds a BA in History Education from Kennesaw State University and a MA in Holocaust and Genocide Studies from Gratz College. Her research focuses on resistance during the Holocaust, and she has published a chapter titled “Professions of Life: Social Welfare Professionals as Rescuers during the Holocaust.” She brings a deep commitment to education and public history to her work.

Mondays, March 16 – April 6 (4 weeks) from 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Journey into the fascinating world of the Maya, Aztecs, and Inca in this four-part illustrated series. We’ll begin by tracing the arrival of the first peoples to the Americas, their migration across the continent, and the agricultural innovations that laid the groundwork for these great civilizations. Each subsequent session will explore the rise and fall of the Maya, Aztec, and Inca empires, along with recent archaeological discoveries that continue to deepen our understanding of their cultures.
About the instructor: Dr. Stephen Kaufman, a native New Yorker, earned his BA from City College of New York, MA from UCLA, and Ph.D. from the Graduate Center, CUNY. He taught Anthropology for over 50 years, including 40 years at Raritan Valley Community College, where he served as Department Chair for nearly 20 years. His notable contributions include archeological research in Serbia, and at Native American sites and revolutionary war encampments. He co-edited the book Racism: A Global Reader and has been a national speaker for the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Wednesday, April 1 from 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
How do photographs shape our understanding of the Holocaust? This program examines the powerful—and complex—role of photography during one of history’s darkest chapters. Participants will explore images taken by perpetrators, victims, liberators, and bystanders to consider how these photographs documented atrocities, influenced public perception, and even served as tools of resistance. Through this lens, the course will discuss the ethical and historical challenges of viewing and using Holocaust imagery today.

Wednesdays, April 1 – April 8 (2 weeks) from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Set sail into the Golden Age of Piracy and uncover the stories behind the outlaws who terrorized America’s eastern shores. This two-part course explores infamous figures like Captain Kidd and Blackbeard, life aboard a pirate ship, and what it was like to fall victim to a pirate attack. Participants will also examine the pirate code, the motivations behind piracy, and its impact on the American colonies—along with the efforts that finally ended this lawless era.
About the instructor: Donald Casey has been a lifelong history nut. He has taught 8th grade Georgia History for 30 years. While working on his bachelor’s degree in history and education, he worked at New Echota State Historic Site in Calhoun, Georgia. He has a master’s degree in Secondary Education with a focus on History and has an Educational Specialist in Teaching and Learning.

Wednesday, February 25 from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Come learn how to make charcuterie boards with our Executive Chef, Shawn Lawrence! Chef Shawn will teach you how to properly place food items to craft an amazing charcuterie board for any event. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about various meats, cheeses, and fruits while gaining valuable culinary skills. All supplies are included in the cost of the course. Participants will bring home their charcuterie to enjoy – unless they decide to eat it in class!
About the instructor: Chef Shawn Lawrence is the executive chef at Berry College, where he creates innovative culinary solutions to meet students’ needs and tastes. He has worked at Berry for two years and in higher education since 2013. Shawn enjoys cooking and eating Indian cuisine—especially curry—and is a proud husband, father, and Carolina Panthers fan.

What makes a march so unmistakable? This six-week interactive course dives into the legacy of John Philip Sousa and other masters of the march tradition. Participants will listen to concert marches by Patrick Gilmore and Karl King, explore the history of U.S. military bands, and learn to identify the unique elements that define the American marching band sound. Come ready to enjoy great music and discover the stories behind these timeless compositions.
About the instructor: Dr. Alyssa Grey holds master’s and doctoral degrees in Music Education, along with undergraduate degrees in Music Education and Music Theory & Composition. She has presented research and sessions for organizations such as the College Band Directors National Association, National Association for Music Education, and the Midwest Clinic. An active conductor and researcher, Dr. Grey’s work has been published in numerous scholarly journals.

Experience the charm of two European regions in this two-part lecture series blending personal stories and cultural insights. In the first session, you’ll explore life in southern Germany through the instructor’s experiences in the historic cities of Passau and Regensburg—uncovering local traditions, everyday life, and the beauty of Bavaria. The second session takes you to southern France, highlighting the vibrant cities of Nîmes, Sète, Carcassonne, and Avignon, each rich in history and character. To conclude each session, enjoy a festive wine tasting featuring selections from both regions. Santé und Prost!
About the instructor: Anna Gaug is a lecturer of French and German at Berry College who has lived in Bavaria and recently spent three weeks in Montpellier for professional development. Passionate about German and French culture, she brings firsthand experience and enthusiasm to her presentations.

Discover the beauty and versatility of daylilies in this engaging program designed for gardeners of all levels. You’ll learn what makes daylilies unique — their history, colors, forms, and characteristics — before diving into practical tips for planting, caring, watering, fertilizing, and managing pests. We’ll also cover how to divide and propagate your plants, plus share resources like national and regional societies, databases, and daylily dictionaries to help you grow your collection. After the lecture, all registrants will also be invited to tour the Kennesaw Mountain Daylily Garden to learn from hybridizer Bill Waldrop and view his greenhouse.
About the instructor: Tammi Freeman has been growing hybrid daylilies since 2010 and currently cultivates more than 225 registered varieties. She is an active member of the Northwest Georgia Daylily Society and the American Daylily Society, regularly attending educational meetings and shows. Tammi’s passion for daylilies shines through in her private garden tours and her commitment to sharing knowledge with fellow enthusiasts.

Elevate your salads with fresh, homemade dressings in this hands-on class! Participants will learn how to prepare a variety of flavorful options, including Lemon Poppyseed, Greek Dressing, Apple Cider Vinaigrette, Green Goddess, Italian Vinaigrette, and Avocado Lime Ranch. You’ll also build your own salad with assorted ingredients provided. All supplies are included in the cost of the course. Participants may enjoy their creations during class or take them home.

Writing & Literature
Mondays, February 16 – April 6 (8 weeks) from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Join a group of avid readers for guided weekly discussions of The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. In the novel, a traveling circus appears without warning and opens only at night. Behind its dazzling tents, two young magicians are locked in a competition they cannot escape, bound by rules they don’t fully understand. As the contest unfolds, lives intertwine and the stakes grow higher. Participants will read 50 to 75 pages prior to each meeting. Participants are responsible for providing their own copy of the book.
About the instructor: Cheryl Huffman has led the Book Club for many semesters with Senior Scholars. She is an avid reader and belongs to two book clubs that meet monthly. She is the treasurer of the Sara Hightower Library, treasurer of the Rome Symphony, and works part time in catering and special events. Prior to retirement, she worked in Financial Aid at Berry and prior to that time was President of Northwest Georgia Credit Union. As an elected official, she served for 20 years on the Rome Board of Education.

Explore the rich tapestry of Southern literature through the lens of short stories by some of the region’s most influential writers. This eight-week course examines themes of identity, race, family, and culture in works by authors such as Flannery O’Connor and Zora Neale Hurston. Through readings, discussions, and low-stakes writing exercises, participants will uncover the storytelling techniques that define Southern narratives and their lasting impact on American culture. Join us for a journey into the heart of the South and discover how these voices shape our understanding of place and identity.
About the instructor: Dr. Whitney Jordan Adams is a scholar-practitioner with expertise in business, rhetoric, communication, and philosophy. She holds an MBA from Berry College and a PhD from Clemson University. Whitney has published several scholarly articles and book chapters, including a recent contribution to Rhetorics of Southern Place. With teaching experience in over 40 countries, she now calls Berry College home. Whitney also has a rescue dog named Abi, who brings joy to her life.

Memories are some of the most important things we collect in this life. What we have done, what we have seen and experienced, and the epiphanies we have gathered shape who we are and, in turn, shape others we encounter. Whether you want to share your story with others or keep it for yourself, you’ll practice shaping your experiences into compelling narratives based on workshop feedback from the instructor and other participants. This course is designed for those who have taken at least one section of Write Your Life and is meant to build off previous experience.
About the instructor: Melissa King directs the Berry College Writing Center and lectures in the English, Rhetoric and Writing department. She has enjoyed guiding Senior Scholars courses over the past five years, bringing her passion for writing and communication into the classroom. Her work supports students across disciplines, and she is dedicated to fostering strong writing skills and a love of language in learners of all ages.

In this hands-on workshop, instructor Kayla Mitchell will guide you through setting up your account and creating simple digital designs you can share online, print as cards or invitations, or even order on custom gifts like t-shirts and mugs. Whether you're designing for fun or for family, this class will help you get started with confidence. All you need is a laptop or tablet and an email address — no prior experience required!
About the instructor: Kayla Mitchell is the Administrative Assistant for the Campbell School of Business at Berry College. A Berry alumna, she earned her B.S. in Psychology in 2015 and returned to campus in 2021 after working in insurance and staffing. She completed her MBA in 2025 and is known for her skill in learning and teaching software, bringing both technical expertise and a supportive spirit to her role.

Disasters are never just natural — they’re also deeply political. This eight-week course examines how disaster risk reduction, preparedness, response, and recovery intersect with power and policy. Through U.S. and international case studies, participants will explore how disasters reveal societal vulnerabilities, create political opportunities, and even trigger regime change. The course will explore blame management strategies, disaster myths, and conspiracy theories, as well as the ways catastrophic events — from hurricanes to pandemics — can unite communities or intensify conflict. Join us for a thought-provoking look at the disaster-politics nexus.
About the instructor: Dr. Vincent T. Gawronski, Visiting Professor of International Affairs at Berry College, researches disaster risk, vulnerability, and forced migration. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Arizona State University and has studied disasters worldwide, focusing on how social factors shape resilience and response.

About the instructor: Daniel Boyd is a thirty-year veteran of information technology and security, all of which he has spent serving Berry College in various roles. He currently serves as Director of Information Security, where he focuses on helping users recognize and avoid scams through emails, texts, websites, and phone calls. His work combines technical expertise with a strong commitment to user education and digital safety.

Athletics & Wellness
Mondays, February 16 – April 6 (8 weeks) from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Zumba Gold is perfect for active older adults who are looking for a modified Zumba class that recreates the original moves participants love at a lower intensity. The design of the class introduces easy-to-follow Zumba choreography that focuses on balance, range of motion, and coordination. Come ready to sweat and prepare to leave empowered and feeling strong! This class will focus on the following elements of fitness: cardiovascular, muscular conditioning, flexibility, and balance. Students will need to come dressed in clothing that allows for free range of motion. Sneakers with light tread (not running shoes) are recommended for Zumba.
About the instructor: Haley Richards is a licensed Zumba instructor and has been teaching Zumba since 2023. A life-long dancer trained in ballet, modern, and jazz, Haley enjoys building community with others through dance in a non-competitive environment. Haley is also a licensed Zumba Gold instructor to dance with active adults in a modified, lower-intensity Zumba class.

Mondays, February 16 – April 13 (8 weeks) from 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Experience yoga at a slower and less intense pace while learning how to use props (blocks, straps, chairs) to build your personal practice. Each class will begin with grounding breath work before practicing gentle yoga poses. Poses are held between 5–10 seconds each and have a variety of options to accommodate all skill levels. This course invites students of all levels to join for a meditative hour of peaceful and restorative practice. Students will need to come dressed in clothing that allows for free range of motion. Providing your own yoga mat is encouraged but not required.
About the instructor: Jennifer Bressette is a 200-hour certified yoga teacher. She has practiced yoga for over a decade and teaches at the YMCA, as well as doing fundraising yoga classes for PAWS.

Thursdays, February 19 – April 9 (8 weeks) from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Take your ballroom dancing to the next level! This class builds on the fundamentals introduced in the beginner course, with continued focus on musicality, posture, footwork, and rhythm. Each week will explore a mix of Smooth (standard) and Rhythm (Latin) styles. No partner is required, but prior experience or completion of the beginner class is recommended. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes that allow you to move with ease—and get ready to dance!
About the instructor: Cris DeRevere grew up dancing in Rome, GA at two local dance studios. She studied ballet, tap, jazz, and hip-hop. She was also on a youth competitive dance team. After graduation, she moved to UGA and began teaching hip-hop and ballet at UGA and joined the UGA Ballroom Performance Group. She served as the PR Coordinator for UGA BPG for one year before taking over the presidency. She was also a member of the UGA Tango Club and Athens Latin Salsa Club. Today, she still dances socially. This will be her second semester teaching with us for Senior Scholars.

Mondays, February 23 – March 17 (4 weeks) from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
As one of the fastest growing sports in the country, Pickleball is a sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. This class is intended for beginners interested in learning the basic rules and skills needed to play Pickleball. The course will cover the history of the sport, basic rules and equipment, serving and returning, forehand and backhand swings, and the critical short stroke known as a “dink.” Students will need to come dressed in athletic shoes and clothing that allows for free range of motion. Pickleball paddles will be available to borrow during class, but you may also bring your own. In the event of course cancellation due to weather, make-up courses will be offered on March 23 & 30.
About the instructor: Mark Lusted is first and foremost a huge pickleball fan. He is a retired engineer who first learned pickleball in the Senior Scholars Pickleball 101 class. He first served as an instructor for the course in Spring 2024, and has been known to say, “If I can learn Pickleball, anyone can learn Pickleball!”

Specialty Tours
Friday, March 6 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Learn about the progression and history of the Berry Schools through a guided tour of the Berry College campus. During the tour, we will discuss both the historical and current uses of many iconic buildings on campus. Highlights include: College Chapel, the Ford Buildings, and Frost Chapel. The tour will include about a half mile of walking, broken up by sections of driving. Wear comfortable shoes to navigate uneven paths.
Location: Meet at Oak Hill for bus shuttle service.

Friday, March 13 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Come take an educational walk with Tennessee Valley Authority botanist John Shelton-Sarabia as you look at common and uncommon plants alike on Berry College’s Victory Lake Trail. Bring appropriate footwear, water, and sun/bug spray for an exciting talk about native plants in the southeast and historically rare or interesting plants seen in Berry College and Northern Georgia. Victory Lake Trail is approximately 2 miles in length. It has a mostly even, gravel path.
About the instructor: John Shelton-Sarabia is the rare plants biologist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, with over a decade of experience in botany. He holds a biology degree from Austin Peay State University and a master’s in environmental science from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. His background includes plant diversity, GIS, and Southeastern U.S. ecology. He has taught plant taxonomy and led wildflower hikes in the Great Smoky Mountains as part of the annual Wildflower Pilgrimage.
Location: Meet at the base of Victory Lake Trail. A map will be sent out prior to the start of the course.

Sitting atop Lavender Mountain at the back of the Berry College campus, the House o’ Dreams was built in 1922 as a gift to Martha Berry on the 20th anniversary of the Berry Schools. Join an Oak Hill docent for a tour of the house to learn more about its history and to enjoy the superb view of the campus. Wear comfortable shoes to navigate uneven paths and sweeping hills.
Location: Meet at The Martha Berry Museum (24 Veterans Memorial Hwy, Rome, GA). Participants will be asked to drive their own vehicles and will caravan with museum staff up to the House o’ Dreams.
