Founded in 1990 by the Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation, the Bonner Scholars Program is one of the nation’s largest privately funded service programs. The foundation, based in Princeton, New Jersey, awards four-year community service scholarships to undergraduate students with financial need and a strong commitment to service, supporting over 2,500 students across 24 colleges and universities in the U.S.
At Berry College, the Bonner Scholars Program aligns with our mission to educate the head, heart, and hands. This program embodies our motto, "Not to be ministered unto, but to minister," by engaging students in meaningful service projects and internships in the Rome/Floyd community.
Berry's Bonner Scholars Program includes approximately 80 students, with 20 in each class cohort. Scholars complete 140 hours of community service each semester with local nonprofits and two summer service projects totaling 280 hours, which can be completed anywhere.
Beyond regular service, Bonner Scholars work in teams to advocate for social issues, gain a deeper understanding of diverse communities, and reflect on the broader significance of their service experiences. This program is a vital part of Berry’s commitment to fostering a Good Neighbor Culture and making a lasting impact.
